The follicular phase begins as your period winds down and runs up to ovulation. Think of it as your inner spring. Estrogen starts to climb, energy returns, and mood tends to lift. For many people this is the phase where they feel most capable and optimistic, a natural green light for new beginnings.

What is happening inside

Rising estrogen prompts your body to begin rebuilding the uterine lining and to mature a follicle in preparation for ovulation. That same estrogen has a supportive relationship with the brain chemicals tied to mood and motivation, which is why the fog of the previous phase clears and drive comes back. Your body also recovers from exertion more readily now.

How to support yourself

This is the time to start things. New projects, creative work, and brainstorming all suit the rising energy. It is a great window to add intensity to your training or try a new class, since recovery is on your side. Support your climbing estrogen with fiber and fermented foods, which help your body process hormones efficiently. The main caution is pacing. The rebound energy can tempt you to take on everything at once, so build steadily and do not skip your warm-ups.
