Pads vs. tampons vs. cups vs. underwear
How each works, when to use what, real talk on TSS.
When it comes to managing your period, there is no single right product, just different options that suit different people and different moments. It is completely normal to try a few before you find what you like, and to use different ones at different times. Here is how each works, in plain terms.
Pads
Pads stick to the inside of your underwear and absorb flow from the outside of your body. They are simple, require no insertion, and are a great starting point, especially when you are new to periods. They come in different thicknesses for lighter or heavier days, and overnight versions are longer for sleeping.
Tampons and cups
Tampons are inserted into the vagina and absorb flow internally, which many people prefer for swimming and sports. Menstrual cups are also internal, but instead of absorbing they collect flow in a small reusable cup, which you empty, rinse, and reuse. Both take a little practice to get comfortable with, and that learning curve is completely normal.
Period underwear
Period underwear looks and feels like regular underwear but has built-in absorbent layers. It is reusable, you just wash it, and it can be worn on its own for lighter days or as backup with another product. Many people find it the easiest and most comfortable option once they try it.
Real talk on TSS
There is one safety point worth knowing about internal products like tampons. A rare but serious infection called toxic shock syndrome, or TSS, is linked to leaving a tampon in for too long. The simple rule keeps you safe. Change your tampon every four to eight hours, never leave one in overnight for longer than recommended, and use the lowest absorbency that handles your flow. If you ever feel suddenly very unwell with a high fever while using a tampon, remove it and tell an adult or doctor right away. This is rare, and basic care prevents it.
This is education, not medical advice. Always loop in a doctor for your real health decisions.
