100 QUESTIONS

Can my period sync with friends?

Plain, evidence-based answers. No shame, no hand-waving.

The science is mixed. The well-known studies from the 1990s have been hard to replicate, though many people report it anecdotally.

The idea that people who live together or spend lots of time together end up with synced periods is a popular one, and many people swear they have experienced it. The honest scientific answer, though, is that it is uncertain.

The notion took off after research in the early 1970s and was discussed widely for decades. But when later scientists tried to reproduce those findings with more rigorous methods, the effect largely did not hold up. Cycles vary in length from person to person and even month to month, so two people's periods will naturally drift closer together and further apart over time, which can create the impression of syncing through coincidence alone.

So if you and a friend seem to line up, you are not imagining the overlap, but the current evidence suggests it is more likely chance than a real biological pull. It is a charming idea that the science just has not been able to confirm.
